Ads, Android, and an RM19 Million Backlog Cleared
The phone in your customer's pocket got a new brain this week — and the grant office cleared its queue.
“Google announced Android rebuilt around Gemini, moving AI from an app to the operating-system layer of the world's most-used mobile platform. OpenAI opened ChatGPT advertising to all advertisers, confirming that free AI will be ad-funded. Reports put Anthropic's next valuation conversation near US$950 billion. And in Malaysia, the Ministry of Digital confirmed the RM19 million backlog in Geran Digital PMKS MADANI payments has been fully cleared through BSN.”
Here's what happened, why it matters, and what your business should do about it.
The Big Three
1. Android Is Now an AI Operating System
Rebuilding Android around Gemini means AI stops being an app your customers choose to open and becomes the layer through which they see everything — including your business. Search, messages, photos of your shopfront, voice queries in Bahasa or Mandarin: increasingly mediated by a model. In a country where the overwhelming majority of internet access is mobile and Android dominates, this is the most locally consequential global story of the week.
2. Free AI Has a Business Model Now: Ads
ChatGPT opening its ad platform to everyone settles the question of who pays for free AI — advertisers do. Two practical readings for an SME: first, a new ad channel with conversational targeting is emerging, worth watching before your competitors price it up. Second, the answers your staff get from free AI tools now exist inside an advertising business — worth remembering when "the AI recommended a vendor."
3. US$950 Billion: The Number Behind the Number
Valuation talk near a trillion dollars for a company that didn't exist six years ago is easy to dismiss as froth. The sober reading: investors are pricing AI as the next platform layer of the global economy, comparable to mobile or the internet itself. You don't have to trade on that belief — but it explains why every software vendor you use is racing to embed AI before their rivals do.
Closer to Home: Malaysia
The local story is small in ringgit and large in signal: the RM19 million payment backlog under the Geran Digital PMKS MADANI has been settled in full, the Ministry of Digital confirmed on 12 May, after coordination with the Ministry of Finance — funds credited to participating companies through BSN.
Why it matters: the most common reason owners gave for ignoring the 50% digitalisation grant wasn't eligibility — it was stories of providers and claimants waiting months for money. That objection has now been addressed in public, with numbers. The programme's fundamentals are unchanged and worth restating: 50% matching up to RM5,000, through 370+ MDEC-listed providers, covering nine solution areas including e-invoicing, digital payments and AI — the exact stack a Phase 4 business needs before the grace period ends in December 2027.
A cleared backlog plus an extended deadline is the friendliest compliance window Malaysian SMEs will get. Windows like this close — usually in a Q4 stampede.
What This Means for Your Business
1. Audit your mobile experience this month
Your customers' phones are becoming AI-first. Search for your own business the way a customer would — by voice, in Malay, asking for "near me" — and fix what the machine gets wrong: hours, location, what you actually sell.
2. Set a one-paragraph AI usage policy for staff
Ad-funded AI tools are now the default free option. Decide what business data may and may not be pasted into them, and which recommendations require a human cross-check. One paragraph, circulated, beats an incident.
3. File the grant claim while the pipe is freshly cleared
The combination — backlog settled, deadline extended, providers listed — will not get better than it is this quarter. If your e-invoice tooling purchase is planned anyway, make the 50% claim part of the purchase order, not an afterthought.
The Practical Question
If the government pays half, the payment pipe works, and the deadline is two years out — what exactly is my reason for waiting?
Write the reason down. If it doesn't survive being written down, it wasn't a reason.
At The Empyrean, we help Malaysian SMEs find the practical, repeatable tasks where AI delivers value without disruption. If you're not sure where to start, we're happy to take a look at your operations and tell you honestly what would make sense.
